The following paragraphs are the only places I could find definitions for Clay Tabernacles. Yes, its scriptures. Please wade through it so as to best understand the meaning of our Clay Tabernacles.
A “Tabernacle of Clay” Mosiah 3:5
5 For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a TABERNACLE OF CLAY, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases.
This passage talks about Christ who is a glorified, eternal God, reigning in heaven, and holding the power to exist from eternity to eternity, He will condescend to “dwell in a tabernacle of clay.” (Mosiah 3: 5.) Christ knew that there were certain activities which He could only perform when clothed in a mortal body: a “tabernacle of flesh.”
To be “exalted” is to already be in possession of what we hope to acquire in mortality. That is, Christ was already exalted. He did not come here for His advancement, according to this angel, but He came and descended into a “tabernacle of clay” in order to serve us.
It is true enough that He would come with a veil of forgetfulness. He would have to endure the frailties of the tabernacle of clay. He would need to study, search, pray and submit. He would have to walk the exact same path which all of us are required to walk.
In the concluding chapters of Moroni, Mormon tells his son that we each have “a labor to perform whilst in this tabernacle of clay, that we may conquer the enemy of all righteousness, and rest our souls in the kingdom of God.” (Moroni 9:6) This vivid image of our bodies as something as earthly and destructible as clay, yet is the vehicle by which we create our eternities.
We too, brothers and sisters, came “into the world” to pass through our particularized portions of the mortal experience. Even though our experiences do not even begin to approach our Master’s, nevertheless, to undergo this mortal experience is why we too are here! Purposefully pursuing this “cause” brings ultimate meaning to our mortal lives (“Apply the Atoning Blood of Christ,” General Conference, October 1997).
